Kolkata's
'The Grand Hotel' was a monopoly during the British era. The success of the
500-room hotel made other star hoteliers jealous. In 1933, thousands died in
Kolkata due to a cholera epidemic. Among them were those staying at The Grand
Hotel. The collapses started from the moment the incident happened. Citing
cholera, the hotel's customers ran away. At one point the hotel had to close
down.
Mohan
Singh bought the bankrupt hotel at a very low price. He started renovating it
